Tea during menopause: what you should know

Menopause is a very special phase of life. Your body is adjusting hormonally, oestrogen levels gradually decrease, and that can lead to noticeable effects. Hot flashes, sleep disturbances, inner restlessness, or mood swings are among the typical symptoms. But instead of feeling at the mercy of these changes, you can use gentle strategies to regain balance. One of them is the power of healing herbs in tea.

Why is tea so soothing during menopause?

Herbal teas don’t just work through their ingredients—they have an impact through the ritual itself. Simply taking the moment to prepare a cup of tea is like placing a small anchor in your day. You take time for yourself, breathe, and settle down, and this alone strengthens your wellbeing in a lasting way.
At the same time, the active compounds support holistic balance, because depending on the plant, they can have very different effects. They can:

  • help balance your system,
  • support you with hot flashes and night sweats,
  • calm your mind,
  • lift your mood, and
  • make it easier to fall asleep.

It’s important to know that tea does not replace medical treatment, but it can be a valuable companion. It’s worth tuning into your body to discover which herbs feel good for you.

Which tea is best right now?

You may now be wondering: “But which tea is actually right for me?” The good news is that there is no single perfect tea for all women—there are many wonderful options. What matters is your personal goal and which flavours you enjoy, because tea should not only support your wellbeing but also taste good.
Depending on your needs, we’ve found various herbal teas that can support you during menopause.

Sage tea for excessive sweating

Sage tea has proven particularly helpful for hot flashes and episodes of sweating. This is mainly due to its tannins. To avoid triggering additional heat, it may help to let the tea cool down a little before drinking it.

Hops and lemon balm for calm and relaxation

If you struggle with inner restlessness or poor sleep, hops and lemon balm can be wonderful allies. Many women report that these herbs help them unwind in the evening and sleep more restfully.

St. John’s wort and lavender for mood swings

St. John’s wort is a well-known herb for supporting emotional balance. However, due to potential interactions with medications, you should only take it after consulting your doctor. A gentler alternative is lavender, which is believed to have balancing effects and can support you on your path to inner serenity.

How to create your own menopause tea

If you enjoy making your own tea blends, you can easily craft your very own menopause tea. You’ll find all the ingredients in a well-stocked health food store, or you can gather and dry them yourself. For your personal menopause tea blend, you’ll need:

  • 4 parts red clover blossoms
  • 4 parts hops
  • 4 parts lady’s mantle
  • 4 parts lemon balm
  • 1 part sage
  • 1 part lavender
  • 1 part cornflower
  • 1 part yarrow

Place the thoroughly dried herbs in a light-protected tin or a dark glass container and mix them by gently shaking.
To prepare the tea, add one to two tablespoons of your herbal blend into a tea filter or tea infuser and pour half a litre of boiling water over it.
Let the mixture steep for five to eight minutes. It’s important to keep the infusion covered while steeping so that the essential oils and active compounds are preserved.
You can enjoy two to three cups of the tea throughout the day.
